This summer we entered exciting new territory at Mauna Kea Technologies, integrating Cellvizio imaging technology with OR suites in the minimally invasive surgery market. And now we have a new CE mark that will allow us to support more surgeons with immediate actionable information that can be used to optimize interventions.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the 7th International Conference of Cellvizio Users in Lisbon, Portugal. This event, made possible by an unrestricted scientific grant from Mauna Kea Technologies, gathered close to 300 physicians, surgeons and researchers from over 30 countries to discuss the evolution of endomicroscopy, a technique used to look at human tissue in real time, at the microscopic level.

Last week, I had the honor of giving a guest lecture as part of Professor Gregory Katz’s “Chair of Therapeutic Innovation” initiative at the prestigious French business school, ESSEC. The course, as he describes it, aims to “ignite fires” and train “the upcoming generation of decision-makers in innovation management and stimulate their sense of ethical leadership.”

It is always a pleasure sharing the story of Mauna Kea Technologies’ creation with enthusiastic and engaging audiences like the one I met at ESSEC.

From Telescope to Microscope: What’s Next for Mauna Kea Technologies

Many might not realize the world’s smallest microscope was inspired by the largest observatory in the world. Before founding Mauna Kea Technologies, I spent time working as an astrophysicist for NASA on the original Mauna Kea… a dormant volcano in Hawaii. During my time there, I worked with incredibly powerful telescopes.

While working atop Mauna Kea, and thanks to many inspiring interactions with physicians, an idea came to me: What if we could take the power of those telescopes and use them to see inside patients at a cellular level? Many of the same principles apply from stars to cells… the lenses are simply installed differently. I returned to France in late 1999 to put this idea in motion.

About a year ago, Fleur Pellerin, who was then Minister Delegate for SMEs, Innovation and the Digital Economy, launched the French Tech initiative. She declared, “French Tech is first and foremost an ambition to build a large collective mobilization movement to support the growth and international influence of French startups.”

In less than a year, we’re seeing a notable impact as French innovators dive into new and emerging markets… areas that have the potential to change our way of life. We can see a booming startup community presenting significant growth and employment opportunities.

In any discipline, and particularly in the field of medicine, change takes time. Advanced technology that disrupts the traditional way of doing things requires early adopters who see value and are eager to share the potential with their peers. As technology becomes more accessible, a large community is formed that carries significant weight in advocacy and in practice. That is the case for Cellvizio and the future of Optical Biopsy.
